Guiding Mid-career Professionals to Jobs They Love

My Go-To Books for Navigating the Mid-Career Crisis

Book recommendations

I often get asked for recommendations of my go-to books and resources that help someone get through the mid-career crisis.

Here are a few of my favorites (click book images for more information):

Career Change/Life Purpose

Now What? 90 Days to a New Life Direction by Laura Berman Fortgang

Now WhatI recommended this book to readers of my blog 5 years ago and it’s still at the top of my list. This is a book that has been central to my career coaching approach since it was first released in 2004, and the revised 10th Anniversary edition is even better. In fact, I find the approach so valuable that I recently became certified as an Authorized Facilitator of the program. So if you’re looking for a more meaningful and fulfilling career, get this book. And if you want a partner to help you through it, let me know!

Body of WorkBody of Work by Pamela Slim

Today’s work environment rarely offers a predictable career path so, to help you make sense of your career I recommend, Body of Work by Pamela Slim. This is her most recent book, and a powerful follow-up to her 2009 book, Escape from Cubicle Nation.

Work-Life Fit

Tweak It by Cali Williams Yost

Tweak ItAs Yost puts it, “we live in a highly mobile, always-on 24-7 society that seems to have a constant vice grip on our lives.” And most of us are looking to have more control, less stress, more fun, more time with family and friends and greater career success. Tweak It helps you take small yet significant steps to fit it all in.

And don’t overlook her first book Work + Life, which serves as a great guide to help you shift your mindset about “work/life balance,” create a strategy, and implement a plan that allows you to have the ideal career and life fit.

Back on the Career TrackAll Moms Work by Sharon Reed Abboud and Back on The Career Track by Carol Fishman Cohen and Vivian Steir Rabin

If you’re a a working parent looking to get off the fast track of your career for a while but still want to ensure you can return to meaningful full time work down the line, then read one or both of these books. And Cohen & Rabin’s website is a treasure trove of resources as well.
